History
Established on May 20, 1946, the White Hills Civic Club has been a cornerstone of community welfare in Shelton, Connecticut. From its inception, the organization’s primary goal has been to foster a sense of unity and support among residents, striving to make Shelton a safer and more vibrant place to live.
One of the earliest initiatives undertaken by the White Hills Civic Club was the formation of a volunteer fire company and the acquisition of a fire truck. In 1947, the White Hills Volunteer Fire Company was officially established, laying the foundation for decades of dedicated service to the community. The following year, in 1948, the club successfully purchased its first fire truck, investing $7,000 in a vehicle crucial for safeguarding lives and property.
To finance the purchase and maintenance of the fire truck, members of the White Hills Civic Club went above and beyond, signing personal notes to ensure the vehicle’s payment. Additionally, they organized two-day country fairs, which became iconic events within the community. These fairs, though labor-intensive, were immensely successful, featuring a plethora of attractions ranging from animal and produce exhibits to baked goods, white elephant sales, snack bars, games of chance, raffles, and lively square dancing. These events not only raised funds but also brought together residents in a spirit of camaraderie and support.
Today, the White Hills Volunteer Fire Company stands as one of Shelton’s four volunteer fire companies, proudly upholding its tradition of service and dedication. Situated in the northern section of Shelton, the company plays a vital role in protecting over 40,000 citizens, encompassing farms, commercial businesses, a state park, and numerous residential areas.
Comprising around 40 active members, the White Hills Fire Company boasts a diverse team of seasoned veteran firefighters and new recruits. Together, they respond to a significant number of calls per year, ensuring rapid and effective emergency response throughout the community. Furthermore, the company extends its assistance to neighboring communities, providing mutual aid services to Derby and Monroe during large-scale emergencies.
Equipped with a comprehensive array of apparatus including a 75-foot ladder truck, rescue pumper, tanker, light-duty rescue, brush truck, marine unit, and ATV, the White Hills Fire Company remains prepared to tackle any emergency scenario with professionalism and efficiency.
In addition to its operational duties, the company’s membership is actively involved in organizing fundraising events throughout the year. From pancake breakfasts to flower sales and boot drives, these events not only contribute to the financial sustainability of the organization but also reflect the enduring commitment to “Neighbors Helping Neighbors” – a motto that encapsulates the spirit of the White Hills Volunteer Fire Company.
